Goals

The course teaches the design of analog and digital integrated circuits (ICs) for high-speed wireless and optical data communication in the multi-GHz and -Gb/s range.

Content

The properties and limits of state-of-the-art Silicon and compound IC technologies (GaAs, InP, GaN) for high-speed data communication are reviewed and compared. The characteristics and modeling of transistors (BP, HBT, FET and HEMT), lumped elements, distributed elements, packages and interconnects are discussed. We teach theoretical basics, design concepts and circuit topologies for analog wireless transceiver ICs (LNA, Mixer, PA, VCO) and optical transceiver ICs (laser driver, detector, multiplexer, demultiplexer and clock recovery). Furthermore, the design of PLL circuit blocks is explained. The lecture gives insights in high-speed measurement techniques and leading-edge IC fabrication. CAD exercises enhance the practical comprehension.

Attestation Requirements

Tutorial 1 and 2 count half points. All other tutorials and the IBM event one point. There are 9 points totally to achieve during this course. 7 points are required for the attestation, 6 in case of a military service.
