Heinz Jäckel is heading since 1993 the "High Speed Electronics and Photonics"-group at the Electronics Laboratory of ETH Zürich. He completed his PhD in EE at the ETH Zurich in 1979. 1980 he joined the IBM Research Division where he held scientific and management positions for 13 years in IBM Rüschlikon, Switzerland and IBM Yorktown Heights, USA. During this time he carried out research in the fields of superconducting Josephson Junction Computers, GaAs-Mesfet ICs and was instrumental in setting up IBM’s Optoelectronics research program.

• Design and characterization of ultrafast InP-HBT transistors for +100 Gb/s electronics
• Multi-10 GHz RF and digital 10-40 Gb/s CMOS IC design
• Ultra dense and Tb/s lightwave communication
• Monolithically integrated InP-based mode-locked diode lasers
• All-optical switches for all optical signal processing at Tb/s data rates
• Planar active and passive InP-based photonic crystals
