Indoor Positioning System

Positioning services are widely used for guiding people, interactive maps, robotics, automated factories, augmented reality, etc. The following positioning methods are commonly used:

• GPS (Global Positioning System) based on trilateration methods associated with satellites acting as reference transmitter.
• Cell-ID (Identification): position is estimated by means of the closest basestation.
• RSS (Received Signal Strength): distance d between reference transmitter and object is determined by the propagation loss.
• TOA (Time of Arrival)
• AOA (Angle of Arrival) by means of goniometry considering the angles of the signals.

Project: RESOLUTION

The goal of this project is the development of an indoor positioning system based on the WLAN frequency band with a high positioning accuracy of 10cm. The project RESOLUTION (Reconfigurable Systems for Mobile Local Communication and Positioning) is funded by the SIXTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME of the EU Information Society Technologies (2.4.5 Mobile and wireless systems beyond 3G).
